Rachel Watson

Rachel Watson is both an instructor and the owner of State Street Clay! Rachel brings more than 26 years of experience as a high school art educator to our Burlington community. She studied at the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design, earned her bachelor’s degree in art education from UW–Milwaukee, and completed her master’s in art education at Concordia University.

Rachel’s artistic heart lies in handbuilding and sculptural work, where she loves exploring form, texture, and creative expression.
At the core of her teaching—and her own studio practice—is a deep belief in the power of discovery. She embraces the full creative journey, from failed attempts and unexpected challenges to the triumphs that come with persistence and curiosity. Sharing that process with others is one of her greatest joys. The excitement students feel when learning new techniques or watching their ideas come to life is a constant source of motivation for her, both personally and professionally.

Outside the studio, Rachel is an eager traveler who’s always up for an adventure, finding inspiration in new places, cultures, and experiences. She is thrilled to bring this opportunity for learning, growth, and community connection to Burlington. During the spring session Rachel will teaching the Into to Hand Building class, Intro to Clay and the One- Time Throwing Experiences.

Wayne Herrick

We are excited to welcome Wayne Herrick, retired Burlington High School art teacher, to share his wealth of skills and knowledge to our shop. Here is what Wayne has to say about his journey:

"Growing up in Chicago, my life revolved around sports. I was all-city in baseball and football in high school. While attending Cornell College to play sports, my focus in life totally changed. I discovered clay.

I have been making pottery since 1974. The first time that I touched cay I knew that it would be a major influence in my life. Little did I know how my passion for clay would lead me in so many unexpected directions. I began as a functional Salt Glaze potter and presently I'm making Horse Hair Pottery. My primary interest in making pottery is creating the forms and shapes that make each piece unique. Classical shapes influence the design of the pottery. Glazes, and the way the fire affects them , also plays an important role in the outcomes.

As I reflect over the years, making pottery has made me who I am today and defines my existence."

For the spring session, Wayne will be teaching the Intro to Throwing classes on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, with intermediate classes to come soon.

Kelly Krober

Kelly Krober is a ceramics artist and instructor with over 20 years of experience working with clay. She earned her degree in Art Education from the University of Wisconsin–Whitewater, where she focused her studies on ceramics and developed a lifelong passion for creating functional pottery.

Kelly’s handmade work can be found in several area shops. Her pottery often focuses on functional forms such as bowls, mugs, and other pieces designed to be used and enjoyed in daily life.

In addition to her personal studio practice, Kelly currently teaches middle school art in a local school district. Known for her calm and encouraging demeanor, she believes that every person can succeed in art regardless of their skill level or prior experience. Kelly is passionate about helping students and community members build confidence, explore creativity, and discover the joy of working with clay.

For the spring session, Kelly will be teaching the Tuesday evening Intro to Wheel Throwing class!
